Like most Maltese restaurants this means food can take a little longer, but good things take time. The owner/chef is also a very nice and courteous man, who comes out to greet his guests before and after he cooks and check they are enjoying their food. The waitress was the loveliest and sweetest woman, we left wanting her to be our friend. The table overlooked the sea and was perfectly laid with a lovely table lamp for ambience (would be perfect for a romantic date). Everything about our evening was perfection. This restaurant came recommended by a Maltese local and thank goodness it was.
It is well priced, and we have seen that when we order the whole hog, that being antipasto - crudo di pesce - pasta - fish - dessert, plus two bottles of wine and countless bottles of water, the bill is moderate and not inflated.īe sure to book! Whenever we are there the chef has to turn away more than one group who turn up without a booking and that's a real shame. We recommend Il Corsaro Ristorantino for a no-frills, genuine, fish extravaganza. The casatella Siciliana is delicious, and recently we were treated to the cannolo and were genuinely impressed. The fish is always well cooked, and balanced with the sides.ĭessert is usually some home-made confection which sees us savouring every mouthful a small spoonful at a time lest we eat it too quickly. To follow, the Italian chef usually prepares some fresh fish together with a salad and some roast potatoes which are all devoured within minutes. We haven't tried one we did not like yet - the pasta with rizzi, or the pasta with calamari are both highly recommended. In my books, the star item on the menu is the "crudo di pesce" - fish sashimi prepared on thinly sliced crisp green apples, drizzled with olive oil and crushed pistachio nuts, and is not only happiness itself, but shared happiness as everyone dips the warm, fresh bread in the remaining oil and herbs.Įqually magnificent are the pasta dishes. The menu is short, and varied according to the local catch. All of our guests have been well pleased by it, and by the freshness of the fish and the simple but fabulous way in which it is cooked and presented. We have visited this esteemed establishment on a number of occasions, and each time has never been a disappointment. The restaurant serves up some of the best fish dishes in Malta - freshly caught and lovingly prepared. Il Corsaro is a tiny restaurant, hence the "Ristorantino" in the name - barely accommodates mores than 5 tables, but don't be fooled by its modest appearance. It was with great pleasure that we discovered this diamond in the rough, in the midst of all the restaurants, divers, and birds of prey (honest! there is a man and his eagles and owls who sets up shop opposite the restaurant). It is also a popular destination with the Maltese and with foreigners alike since there are many eateries packed into such a small location. Wied iz-Zurrieq is mainly known as the location to embark on a voyage to visit the Blue Lagoon.
Although the next place we have reviewed is named after the corsairs, whose ties to Malta run deep - Il Corsaro Ristorantino is anything but a pirate venture.
